Description
Hallgrímskirkja – A Must-See Landmark in Reykjavik, Iceland
When you're wandering around Reykjavik, make sure to check out Hallgrímskirkja—it's the city's most iconic church! The design, inspired by Iceland’s volcanic landscape and those unique basalt rock formations, stands out and can be spotted from nearly every corner of the town.
Hallgrímskirkja, designed by Gudjon Samuelsson and completed in 1986, is an incredible sight with its unique architecture that looks like cooled lava reaching for the sky. Standing at about 74 meters, this is the tallest building in Reykjavik. What’s the most exciting part? Take the elevator up to the observation tower, and you'll be greeted with breathtaking views that are totally worth it. From above, you can soak in the stunning views of Reykjavik’s vibrant rooftops, the majestic mountains nearby, and the vast Atlantic Ocean that unfolds in front of you.
When you get close to the church, keep an eye out for the statue of Leif Erikson standing right in front. It was a present from the United States to honor the legendary Norse explorer. The vibe inside is super chill and serene, especially with that huge pipe organ that really shines during concerts.
If you're after amazing city views, intrigued by distinctive design, or simply want to create beautiful memories, Hallgrímskirkja is a must-visit on your Iceland journey.
