Almudena Cathedral

The Almudena Cathedral is a modern landmark with a rich history. 

The Almudena Cathedral is right across the street from the Royal Palace. It is just as grand as its neighbor, but it has a very different story. This church isn't as old as many others in Europe; it was finished in 1993 after more than a hundred years of planning and building. 

Neoclassical and Gothic Revival styles can be seen from the outside. When you go inside, though, you'll see that the ceilings are painted with bright geometric patterns. This is a modern touch that makes the huge room feel surprisingly cozy. A quiet vault with Romanesque touches is downstairs, where the mood is very different. 

You can get a great view of Madrid and the Royal Palace below by going up to the dome and rooftop deck. With its mix of old and new, dark and bright, Almudena is not like any other church. 

It's not just a religious place; it's also a sign of how Madrid's character is changing. It's a beautiful mix of old and new.
